Personal Profile

Li Wang is an associate professor with a specialization in new media research. Her research focuses on understanding patterns of information dissemination (including science, rumor and crisis information) in social media, associated consequences, government responding mechanisms, and public policy making.

Dr. Wang teaches courses at both undergraduate and graduate level, in mass communication as well as public administration. Her teaching philosophy prioritizes building connections between theory and daily life and promoting interactive instruction.

Dr. Wang’s work has been published in several leading communication and journalism journals in China, including Journalism Review, New Media and Society, and International Communication. She is a co-author or associate editor for several books, including Cultural Industry and Creative Planning (Beijing: Tsinghua University Press, 2015), and Report on China Public Opinion and Crisis Management (Beijing: Social Sciences Academic Press, 2013). Her current research interest is studying science and health communication and crisis communication from the perspective of risk management.

 

Dr. Wang is a member of several professional societies including the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass (AEJMC), the Chinese Association of Public Opinion Research (CAPOR), and the American Society for Public Administration(ASPA).

 

Prior to joining the UESTC faculty in November 2014, Dr. Wang earned her Ph.D. from the Institute of Arts and Humanities at Shanghai Jiaotong University in June 2014. During her doctoral study, Dr. Wang visited the School of Media and Journalism at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel hill for 1 year as a visiting international scholar. She is the first international graduate student enrolled by this visiting program in history at UNC. From 2017 to 2019, Dr. Wang completed her 2-year visiting postdoctoral fellowship at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, Northwestern University, USA, where she was working with Dr. Donna Leff to do advanced research about Media Coverage of Health/Science/Environment Issues and to improve her teaching skills.

 

Dr. Wang has a B.A. in digital media from Southwest University, and an M.A. in journalism from Sichuan University, China. She is also affiliated with the Center of Digitalized Culture and Media in the UESTC.
