Sajeewa Maharachchikumbura is a Professor at the School of Life Science and Technology, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.
He is mycologist and interested in understanding the diversity of life. He focusses on fungi and his research has always been a desire to conserve the richness of nature. He is working on Pestalotiopsis-like fungi, a group of phytopathogens and prolific producers of secondary metabolites, focusing on taxonomy, phylogeny and biochemistry of a subset of them. Another aspect of his research is trying to understand the phylogenetic relationships among different groups of fungi, including pathogenic and saprobic, which are belong to the class Sordariomycetes. Other interests include emerging fungal threats to plants in Sichuan Province, China and conservation and biodiversity of fungi in China.
He has been selected as the “Young Asian Mycologist” by the Asian Mycological Association in 2017 and has been placed on the Web of Science Highly Cited Researchers list in 2018 and 2019. He serves on the editorial boards of several scholarly journals. Currently he is a visiting Professor of Mycology at the Center of Excellence in Fungal Research, Thailand.
