Personal Profile
Hua Wang is a distinguished Professor and esteemed team leader specializing in borehole geophysics at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). Since 2023, he has assumed the role of Vice Dean for the School of Resources and Environment at UESTC. Recognized as a National Level Young Talent by the central government of the People's Republic of China, his contributions to academia and research are highly regarded.
Prior to his tenure at UESTC, Dr. Wang held a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2014-2018). He has also lent his expertise as a technical consultant for ultrasound at Gowell International and New England Research. Dr. Wang earned his BSc in exploration geophysics from China University of Petroleum-East China in 2005 and completed his PhD in exploration geophysics from China University of Petroleum-Beijing in 2012.
The majority of his work has been dedicated to borehole geophysics, induced seismicity, HT/HP borehole tool design, AI in Geophysics, and data processing for DTS/DAS. He has served as Principal Investigator for over 20 research projects, including three NSFC projects, and projects supported by COSL, CNPC, Sinopec, and Halliburton. He polished 45 first (or corresponding) author papers published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. Notably, his paper on cement bond logging was featured as a highlight in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America in 2016. Additionally, he co-authored a book with Professor Nafi Toksöz and Dr. Michael Fehler on Borehole Acoustic Logging – Theory and Methods, which has been published by Springer.
Dr. Wang holds key editorial roles, serving as Editor-In-Chief of Artificial Intelligence in Geosciences and as an associate editor of the Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering. He also assumes leadership positions, acting as the president of the SPWLA Southwest China Chapter and the program chairperson of the SPE Chengdu Section. Currently, he serves as a member of the Education Board of the International Petroleum Technology Conference.
His remarkable contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the 2020 SPWLA Meritorious Service Award, the 2020 Fu Chengyi Youth Science and Technology Award—the highest honor bestowed upon young scholars under 45 years old by the Chinese Geophysical Society—and the 2022 SPE Regional Technical Award-Formation Evaluation for Northern Asia Pacific Region.
